Cult Beauty Essentials

With new beauty products launching on a near-daily basis, there are a few iconic beauty essentials that have stood the test of time due to their exceptional formulas. We’d be lying if we said we didn’t steal a few of these from Momma Rebena back in the day and we still continue to add them to our shopping lists today.

4Rosebud-Perfume-Co.-Smiths-Rosebud-Salve-

Smith’s Rosebud Salve, Rosebud Perfume Co. $6

I seriously am smitten with these old-fashioned tins, aren’t you?  The fact that the company is over 100 years old, family-owned and produces these lip balms in the good old US of A makes me beyond happy.  They’re not expensive and work great as a lip balm, cuticle moisturizer and dabbed on chapped elbows or knees.  It is also an excellent remedy for the treatment of diaper rash

5Maybelline-Great-Lash-Washable-Mascara1

Great Lash Washable Mascara, Maybelline $5

This lil’ pink and green tube of mascara sells every two minutes.  Crazy!  It’s a simple mascara with an easy to use wand and a dark, shiny formula to lift and separate your lashes. Maybelline was named after creator Tom Williams’ sister Mabel; in 1915, she gave him the inspiration to create cosmetics after he watched her applying Vaseline and coal to her lashes to make them darker.

2LOreal-Elnett-Satin-Very-Volume-Hairspray1

Elnett Satin Very Volume Hairspray, L’Oreal $12

This only made its way to Canada a few years ago – it used to be that you’d have to smuggle it from overseas.  What makes it so great?  It’s super-light, brushes out clean, it doesn’t flake or leave hair sticky.  (Although I could live without the slightly old-lady scent.)  Sometimes when I’ve been sitting in fancy salon chairs, the stylist has busted out the Elnett instead of their own products to set my hairstyle.  Doesn’t that say something?

1Revlon-Super-Lustrous-Creme-Lipstick-in-Cherries-in-the-Snow

Super Lustrous Lipstick in Cherries in the Snow, Revlon $8

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in “Cherries in the Snow” (Color 440) is a cult color that has been around since 1954.  While most makeup trends come and go, this particular raspberry-red shade withstood the test of time.  The fantastic formula applies evenly with no feathering, does not settle on lines and does not highlight imperfections.  It makes your lips look plump and healthy.

If you are on the fence about getting this color, don’t!  You can never go wrong with Cherries in the Snow.

6Sally-Hansen-Hard-as-Nails-Polish-in-Bad-To-The-Bone1

Hard As Nails Polish, Sally Hansen $3

This nail care classic was the first Sally Hansen product to come to the market and has been around for over 50 years and for good reason. One coat gives a layer of protection that also seals nail edges so that they’re less susceptible to splitting.  It’s so versitile – wear it at all times – under color or on its own to add a subtle sheen to your natural nails.  I personally like “natural version” that adds a pretty, sheer-pink glow to bare nails.  Love this one – and it dries insanely fast.  Bonus!

Lacquer Lovers

A perfect manicure in a hot-off-the-runway color is the easiest way to update your look.  Here are some of Rebena’s favorite colors for Spring 2015 – fresh off the runway!

Melon

Manicured Models Delpozo’s Spring 2015

Kickin’ this blog off with my favorite pick of 2015 – a color I like to call “Peachy-Melon”.  Fans of spring’s 1970’s trend should head straight for perfect peach hues at the nail salon.  Nothing looks better with the decade’s retro florals, true blue denim and sumptuous suedes than this vintage-inspired shade.  Negative space nail art and melon hues are two trends that were made to come together!  Just look at the divine manicure at Delpozo’s spring 2015 show for proof.  If brooding or bright colors aren’t for you this hue is a softer option to play with.

Christian Louboutin Nail Polish in Stone

Christian Louboutin nailed it with this cool stone grey color in his just-launched lacquer line. The polish, seen here at Peter Som’s spring 2015 show, is a perfect way to branch out if you’re the type to play it safe at the nail salon.

Copper

Matte Bronze – Giorgio Armani

Take a page straight out of Giorgio Armani’s playbook and mix metallic hues for a thoroughly modern effect. Specifically, pair silver jewelry and glimmering eyeliner with bold copper nails made soft with a matte topcoat.

Gold Stripes - Light Pink

Christian Louboutin – Gold Stripes & Petal Pink

Petal pink nails might seem somewhat plain but give them a good three-coat job and add a subtle gold stripe at the base of nails and the look feels incredibly romantic and not at all basic. Girls with longer nails, this hue is for you.  Gold stripes have been gracing the runways.  You can get awesome metallic lines without using polish – a great way to dress up your nails this summer!

Teal

Jin Soon

Conjure old-world glamour with this sultry shade. Used here: a soon-to-be-released, yet-to-be-named shade from Jin Soon’s spring collection.  There are equally beautiful teals out there for the meantime for you to try.

FilthyNails

Filthy Rebena’s Nails – Dusty Rose

What’s Rebena sportin’?  Dusty rose – a forever personal fave.  This is very close to Pantones color of the year, Marsala.  Rebena has been dreaming of working her office in dusty rose, grey and a raw silk color.  Do you have a favorite nail color trend that was not mentioned in this post?  Will be be trying any of these colors this Spring?  Let Rebena know your lacquer loving thoughts in the comments below!

Cuticle Tattoos

orig

It’s an exciting time for nails! But with that said, the nail art market has become a little crowded. So when something original comes across our desks, we take notice. One recent example: cuticle tattoos! Rad Nails, a popular online nail decal shop that has already partnered with Zooey Deschanel, recently released cuticle and nail “tattoos.”

Essentially, they’re temporary tattoos designed to fit your cuticles and nail beds. The effect is cool and eye-catching—if you have a polish color you really love, the tattoos are a good way to draw attention to it and show it off. There are four different shapes, each available in 20-packs that go for $6.   We love the final effect and think they’re a great option for changing up your mani in an unexpected way.  Will you be trying nail tattoos out?
